12th International Architecture Exhibition

The slogan suggested by the chief trustee – „ People meet in architecture” – is a trivial one. It may well be interpreted as narrowly as the meeting of architects from all over the world. However, we can also see it as follows: our earthly existence is defined and framed by an overconstructed artificial environment nowadays which as a result increases the responsibility…

Library-upgrade 2010

The investment of the South-Transdanubian Regional Library and Knowledge Centre was the last one to be included in the projects Pécs submitted in its application for the title of European Cultural Capital in 2005. However, it was the first of the major public buildings to be completed: it was inaugurated on September 8th, 2010.

The Bauhaus Exhibition of Prodigal Posterity

For example, the following artists are represented in the exhibition: the artists of Pécs (Marcell Breuer, Ernő Forbát, Hugó Johan, Farkas Molnár, Henrik Stefán, Andor Weininger, Etel Fodor) and other Hungarians active in the Bauhaus era (Sándor Bortnyik, László Moholy-Nagy, Gyula Pap, Judit Kárász, Irén Blüh, Otti Berger),…

Wings and Roots

The new school opened now is next to the kindergarten built two years ago. It seems to be surprisingly spacious from the outside. However, we have a different impression on entering it: there are a number of large spaces but nothing is superfluous and the dimensions are never overwhelming us. As much as it was posible, the designer respected what is in the interest of…

The Museum Design of Mestre

Situated in the vicinity of Venice, Mestre has been preparing to create its new cultural centre since 2005 to establish new standards in the shade of the frequented tourist destination. Museo del Novecento, which is the museum of the 20th century, shall come into being within the framework of a large-scale rehabilitation project of the city.

A Region as Value

Nowadays it is a must for an architect working in the hope of success to consider regional values. Actually everyone is working „in the countryside” except for a few centres of international standards. These „centres” are fed by the spirituality of regions, which proves the importance and significance of regionalism. It is a mistaken approach when a region follows the trend…

A House on the Rock

Todd Saunders chose the barren cliffs of Fogo Islands off the coasts of Newfoundland as the site to build his uniquely positioned studio houses for an association of artists. The other part of the programme is the construction of a whole artists’ colony by updating the traditional dwelling-houses of the island so that the complex could accommodate…

Landscape, Structure, Community

The exhibition at the Swiss Pavillion of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice is meant to find new answers to old questions. Famous for his virtuosic engineering achievements, Jürg Conzett architect and Martin Linsi photographer collected structures belonging to the transportation network embracing the whole country but because of their intertwining…

Perfectionism

The premises in Tengelic are not more than a fine masterwork, but its significance is far greater than that. By realizing a passive office building now exposed to the public out of disguise new vistas are opened up for new buildings the architectural appearance of which must present in an emphasized and attractive way that houses with an ecological approach…

Family Home, Perbál

Experimenting with more uncertain forms at the beginning of its evolution, Modernist architecture has proven to be more humane than the extremely self-certain and strict later period not tolerating ambiguities. The roof design does not reflect whether it was meant to be a gabled or hipped roof. Walls defining the building are not perpendicular to each other…
