The first stage of the extension and modernization project of the Hospital of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John based in Buda has been completed. The new wing of the complex is now set in an environment which is not only a precious spectacle as part of a world heritage site, but also has an exceptionally exciting architectural texture. One of the most significant medical institution of the town of Buda in the middle ages was housed in the neighbourhood managed by the order of the Holy Spirit till the 16th century, later on by the king himself. The hospital of the Hospitaller Order was built in the early 19th century on this site. Functioning even today, it was opened in 1903 after designs by Ferenc Kiss, then lecturer for the university of technology with a characteristic revival Gothic-style gatework and facades graced with bands of bricks that resulted in a blend of the styles of the turn of the century and revivalism (historicism). Hosting 350,000 patients each year, the institution was extended as the order had a dream of a large-scale healthcare institution offering modern services and a variety of wards. Launched in 2017, the first stage now inaugurated was financed by the order itself whilst the second stage to be completed by 2022 will be co-sponsored by the Hungarian state.<\/p>\n
