The concept to create the intermodal interchange in Kaposvár was first shaped ten years ago. The ambition behind this scheme was to unite the downtown long-distance coach terminal, the local bus terminal and the railway station, which are housed in separate structures, but are quite close, with the priority that passengers should be served among safer, more organised and comfortable conditions when transferring, changing public transport vehicles. The creation of intermodality naturally allowed for the structural transformation of the zone of intervention, as well as for a high-standard facelift of its architectural environment. One of the most spectacular components of this project is the suspension bridge made of metal with slanting pylons, which spans a 200-metre section of the inner city with the Donner, bridging over the railway, the bus terminal and the motorway. With a width of 8 metres, this arched bridge was built to facilitate both cycling and pedestrian traffic divided from each other, with immediate access (via staircases and lifts) to the joint platform of the railway and motorway, as well as to the bus terminal. At both ends of the bridge also a comprehensive rehabilitation of the zones concerned was completed simultaneously.
