Tender for the Development of the Building and the Environment of the National Museum

    Text: Bálint Botzheim, György Szegő

    Az 1. díjas pályamű

The deadline of the open, secret international design tender for the development of the National Museum and the Musem Garden is over. 83 teams submitted their applications, and out of the 61 valid designs the jury has selected 5 for a prize. Both the description of the design tender published and the results have been received with an intense attention and heated debate among professionals. Going on for many years, the second phase of the reconstruction was completed in 2002, on the bicentenary of the foundation of the Museum. This tendering is meant to continue the development based on financial support from the European Union. AHA (the Association of Hungarian Architects) expressed their concerns in an announcement in February 2010 drawing attention to the fact that the development of a building so significant would require the consideration of its environmental-urban relations. However, this proposal has had no impact. Designs by István Mányai’s architects’ studio were awarded the first prize according to a decision stirring heated debates. It was argued that a concept focussing on the chances of winning was favoured at the expense of grand-architecture expectable in the case of a national institution of excelling prestige. Clever and economical propositions of disposition may be correct in the short run, but in the case of such an iconic project long-term national cultural strategies should have priority over other concerns.
