Getting started
The first generation of generative software to help design
Text: Bálint Botzheim
Generative methods have been present in architectural research since the 1990s, however, until recent years, few thought they could play a role in real design processes. The situation is changing and today Autodesk, the largest software vendor, has also flagged the use of generative systems. In addition, several startups address the topic. Among other things, Spacemaker AI was founded in 2016 with the goal of making generative design a tool that can also be used by the profession. At this stage, their software, which can be used in an Internet browser, Spacemaker, is a special area of architectural design called can help with the installation workflow, the placement of building blocks on the site. The lesson of the first generations of generative techniques is that the role of the designer is not only diminished but even more valued, generative software needs to be properly managed to come up with a professionally acceptable solution.
