In 2002 a contest for universities and the construction industry was launched on the initiative of the government titled Solar Decathlon to encourage designs and the construction of modern exemplary residential buildings that offer innovative, energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable alternatives based on renewable energy resources that can be built easily. The university teams enterint this contest co-operated with industrial partners and sponsors and could spend a longer period to design and develop their projects, whilst their houses for the tender had to be built within 10 days on the site. Projects were assessed in 10 categories (this is where the title referring to sports comes from), such as energy-efficiency, engineering design, construction, architecture, sustainability, life expectancy on the market, etc. After five years of ceasure, this European event has arrived in Hungary at last.
