The evolution of stadium designs is a fine illustration of changes in society and economic systems. Stadiums built earlier were primarily meant to function as sports venues, and thus had not raised issues of return or income-generation concerning investment or operation. Nowadays the so-called third-generation stadiums obviously adjust to contemporary needs and requirements. However, fourth-generation ones already go beyond the stadium function as they are iconic buildings making use of their environment that actually serve as genuine communal spaces – independently of events and matches, each day and all the year round, if possible.
