Flowing across Vienna, Budapest and Belgrade, the River Danube has been one of the most important trade routes of Europe for centuries. Situated by the mouth of the river Sava, Belgrade is an especially significant interregional junction. Since the proclamation of Yugoslavia in 1929 the town has had a new function: it had to develop into a modern European city within a few years. The exhibition of the Viennese Ringturm opened now presents the architecture of Belgrade between 1945 and 2010 as divided into three periods. These are eras defining the cityscape of today’s Belgrade and its points of orientation for contemporary architecture.
