Gábor Karátson Memorial
Home Museum, Budapest
Concept and text: Pál Somogyi
Gábor Karátson, artist and writer died at the age of 81 in 2015. Awarded many prizes and recognitions, he had a versatile career. As a result, he left behind an extraordinarily rich oeuvre. In line with the intentions of his family, the objective here was to preserve his spiritual heritage with due care and respect, to present his rich artistic heritage as well as the objects he left behind, as well as to establish an apartment museum and archives. The former is to be housed in the restored and modernized studio which has two parts: the private residence for his widow and the public exhibition section space to present the collection as well as the adjoining community areas.
Back at university, the artist was a member of the revolutionary committee of ELTE during the revolution in 1956, for which he was punished and sentenced to prison and excluded from every university and college in the country. The section of the exhibition referring to this is organised around his literary work titled Ötvenhatos regény (The Novel of 1956) written in 2005 and several radio and television interviews about the revolution.
