Utopias and Realities: Socialist Modernism
Collegium Hungaricum Berlin, 28-29 April 2016
‘Utopias and Realities: Socialist Modernism’ is a two-day long series of lectures, movie screenings and events connected to post-war Central and Eastern European architecture. From the forgotten Communist monuments of Bulgaria to the genealogy of the Alexanderplatz and to public buildings and transportation hubs of the former Socialist countries, now threatened by demolition, the conference brings together topics which belong to the often neglected common cultural heritage of the region.
The event, organized by the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin and the Translations of Modernism collective, offers lectures by 17 architects, art historians and experts from 9 countries. The 25-min long lectures offer insights into different relevant topics, and are accompanied by two movie nights. The whole program takes place in the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin, and attendance is free of charge.
