Whether villa or house, the private residence has always been – and always will be – a touchstone in the oeuvre of every architect. We encounter it at the start of our studies and then later, in different situations and under different conditions demanding instant response, throughout our practising careers. On the other side, it is also a mirror of the lifestyle, the will, and the self-presentation of the clients. The theme of the villa and the single-family house was, for half a century starting in the 1940s, deliberately neglected both as a built form and as a subject for scholarship. Moreover, great many of the builders and potential builders of these residences numbered among the victims persecuted, expelled or murdered by the forces of Nazism and Communism…
