The Heritage of the Late Modern Hotel Architecture at Lake Balaton
Evaluation Beyond Nostalgy
Text: Júlia Böröndy
With the relieve after 1956, the tourism of Hungary inculding Lake Balaton, could revive. The expansion of accommodation capacity was a clear response to the needs of the growing holiday crowd, which also involved the construction of new hotels. The buildings, which were considered modern at the time, are now the subject of many criticisms and do not enjoy an appeal among either its users or the local people. Reflecting on contemporary perspectives, my research is based on not only the study of literature and archive journals but also on my own survey. The survey examined the current perception of the hotel architecture of Siófok in the ’60s and’ 70s, and its evaluation highlighted the contradictions of the topic and the contrast between the opinions of locals and potential users.
