The Inexpressihle, the Intangible (Space) and Sacred Architecture
Text: István Schneller
Every theory engaged in sacred architecture, as well as practical considerations have the same basic question: the possibilities of the representation of the sacred in arts. Architecture has a unique position in this respect as the question is even more significant when a church is to be built. Is this representation viable and necessary, or to put it another way: what are the additional contents which – beyond functional and aesthetic requirements and needs as well as beyond high-standard architectural formation – can be present in a building of sacred functions? There are as many evaluations and aproaches as many creators to this inexpressible additional content which is so difficult to grap. The presence of the lack of the intangible has turned into an issue: this is the very topic of the essay below.
