The Survival of Tradition in the Architecture of Kós’s Followers
Text: Gábor Erhardt
The author of the study compares the contemporary concepts of vernacular, national and modern architecture in the context of Károly Kós’ architecture, the direction of „progress” as formulated by Kós and its examples embodied in plans and buildings, viewing contemporary Scandinavian architecture as a source of inspiration present in them. In the following, the oeuvre of Imre Makovecz, who continued to live on Kós’s ideas and principles, and the work of the architects who formed the Károly Kós Association, which he founded, are used to illustrate how Kós’s ideas have continued to live til the present, highlighting the works of two artists, Tibor Heil and Endre Szűcs. The author of this paper does not see a contradiction between vernacular, national and modern architecture, but a special relationship that is still valid today.
