This community grove was built on the site of a small former park. Its area has been extended, taking over the adjacent land. The landscape plan has cleverly made use of the existing site. The trees have been retained, with only young ones being replaced, diseased ones have been replaced and some of the poorer quality trees will be replaced in the future. The new roads and access points also took into consideration the existing alignments, which were preserved and finely tuned. This way, the use of the area was created in a natural way. The existing directions and vegetation were used to mark out the location of the pavilion building within the grove. It almost didn’t need to be planned: it was created. The programme of functions to be incorporated into the pavilion was still very much in the planning stage. Several times during the planning process, a new aspect or investor demand arose. Thus its early design could not evolve from the function, but it could have been shaped by the way it is related to the park. The designers proposed a flexible response to these changes without compromising the building’s primary relationship, thus creating a new place in the landscape.
