Thanks to an earlier cooperation, in 2016 the Municipality of Érd entrusted the Department of Public Space Designs of the Faculty of Architecture at the Budapest Technical University with the design schemes of two primary schools, one of which, Fenyves Parkváros Public Education Centre, is located on the north-western edge of the town. The client’s objective was to create a new sub-centre with commercial functions, a kindergarten with 4+4 classrooms, a primary school with 24 classrooms, a swimming-pool, a gymnasium and a secondary grammar school that could be built at a later stage. From the carefulness and thoughtfulness of the layout, the way in which the various functions are arranged and the way in which the environment is managed, it is obvious that the design team has done a specifically thorough job. The layout of the school building is clear and unambiguous: the site has been divided into an east-west axis, approximately one-third to two-thirds proportions, with courtyards and blocks alternating on each side. The central axis, which includes the main entrances and the lobby, is connected to the north by a block containing classrooms and three courtyards, and to the south by the gym hall, the sports field and the swimming pool. The north-south division of the site is thus clearly differentiated according to their users: to the north there are the school’s own spaces, while the functions to the south are open to those who come here as outsiders. The four courtyards around the six main parts of the building are of different qualities and functions, and their uses are differentiated according to the interior spaces associated with them.
