Industrial Heritage-Based Revitalization Experiments Along the Northern Pest Railway Line

    Text: Hanna Szenner

The research analyzes the potentials of the building stock in industrial zones along the northern Pest county railway line, using an approach that examines the problems from a new perspective, going beyond traditional land survey methodologies.

Through the analysis of specific examples of the industrial areas under study, the aim now is to identify general correlations that facilitate the simplified assessment of brownfield sites. To this end, in addition to examining specific areas, a unique approach, the so-called „pipette method” was developed during the research work. The project does not propose specific architectural interventions, but presents an alternative approach that can help in the utilization of brownfield sites. It applies a methodological approach that supports strategic planning and informed decision-making in brown-field revitalization within the possibilities of data creation. The method proposes a unique experimental approach, without claiming to be fully exhaustive, but also providing missing data for the areas studied. The topic is particularly timely and relevant in the current urban development discourse, as it raises important and topical issues related to sustainable urban renewal as well as the utilization of brownfield sites. The research was based on the survey documentation of the “I’5 Industrial Heritage Workshop” operating at the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture at Óbuda University. Within the framework of the workshop, students specialized in architecture are engaged in mapping and documenting our industrial heritage.
