Sky Court, Liszt Ferenc International Airport

An airport in the 21st century is a complex system of a variety of functions, delicate technology and – almost compulsorily – a mixture of attractive sights. Offering first-class comfort, the former Ferihegyi 2A-2B terminal has been extended by a hall of world standards. Being constructed since the 1980s, the structure of the airport has been enriched with two reception buldings and a connecting body which makes the exciting experience of departure even more unique. The three parts are integrated now into one unit bearing the name Liszt Ferenc Airport after their inauguration. Zoltán Tima Zoltán and his fellow architects have included the entire system of criteria, expectations regarding safety, logistics, traffic organization, and technology into a single large-scale and generous architectural form, which represents the eternal desire of mankind to be able to fly as a metaphor. Viewed from the direction of the city, it does not reveal its genuine character: it only appears as if a component of fine details wedged between the two former building parts. The interior, however, is a real surprise: it is a complex experience to see the wings of Icarus arching over the central hall and the sun shining through the glass bands in-between the ribs.
