An Ultra-Modern Hungarian Architect In Shanghai
Károly Gonda’s Memorial Year
Text: Eszter Baldavári
Organized by the Hungarian Architects’ Association, the programmes of Károly Gonda’s Memorial Year have started. Hardly known in Hungary, the architect was an outstanding character of Sanghai’s Art Deco. Born in Gyöngyös, he studied in Vienna, and was taken as prisoner of war in Russia, from where he made his way to the Chinese city. A book translated into three languages is going to be published during the memorial year, a conference will be devoted to his career, and contemporary photographs of his buildings made by Nick Almasy are also going to be presented.
