Biophilia?
Text: Marcell Szuhanyik
In the last hundred years we’ve come a long way from the vernacular, the experience-based architectural solutions. New wave of materials, pre-fab thinking and printing architecture are all technological novelties, which are now entailed by researches concerning human well-being in such spaces. Biophilia is the scientific attitude behind these researches – an area in between architectural design and environmental psychology, mainly based on observation and analysis of cognitive, psychological and physiological studies. Biophilia focuses on patterns that reach back a few hundred thousand years. Patterns of natural systems, visual and non-visual connection with nature, thermal and airflow variability, light and water. Also, it experiments with natural analogues and basic instinctive behaviour, finding a balance between useful and harmful stimulation. The goal of biophilia is to offer the adequate tools and architectural skillset for designers to be capable to plan spaces in accordance with their purpose, aimed for it’s inhabitants whether they are healing spaces of a hospital, a gigafactory for mass production or a teahouse for inner deepening.
