Church Spire within Insula Lutherana, Győr
Students’ Brainstorming Contest
The Lutheran Old Church in Győr was built in 1783-85 based on the decree of tolerance. In line with this, the structure built without a spire had to be closed off from the street-front. Surrounded by two-storey buildings, the church is situated in the gate of Győr-Újváros, on the bank of the River Rába. Organizing the Five Churches Festival, Karzat Alapítvány (Choir Foundation) published a brainstorming contest for ideas to include and design the belfry never built before because of the prohibition within the block of the Old Church, which shall be one of the venues of the festival. The publisher of the contest expected solutions presenting the spire as not only part of the church, but also as a sign-like symbol of the whole „Evangelical island”.
