Magyar Építőművészet // Hungarian Architecture is the official review of the Association of Hungarian Architects since 1903. Our mission is to present the contemporary Hungarian architectural scene both in national and international scene. We always publish our articles abstracts in English, which are available in our website – meonline.hu – as well. Published six times a year.
Our periodical titled Magyar Építőművészet // Hungarian Architecture is committed to follow ethical guidelines and norms of professional literature and scientific publications, in line with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE, https://publicationethics.org/), an international and independent organisation of professionals. Each participant involved in the publication processes, such as authors, proofreaders, peer reviewers and experts are to embrace the ethics of scientific publications. The decision to publish manuscripts submitted to our periodical is made by the editor-in-chief based on the peer reviewer’s opinion (double blind review).
Decisions concerning publication
General Principles
The editor-in-chief decides whether a publication meets the objectives and basic requirements defined by the periodical regarding both its contents and format. Any publication falling outside the profile of the periodical, or failing to meet the criteria set, considering either the contents or the format, may be rejected by the editor-in-chief without giving reasons or a peer review.
Equal Opportunities
The editor-in-chief only assesses the intellectual content of the manuscript, regardless of the author’s race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality and citizenship, religious or political views.
Confidentiality
The editorial board shall not pass on any information concerning the manuscripts submitted for publication, The only exceptions to this rule are the publishers, proofreaders, consultants, peer reviewers, or potential consultants and editorial assistants.
Publication and conflict of interests
Editors are not allowed to use any unpublished excerpts of the submitted manuscript for their own research work without obtaining the author’s prior consent. Editors and members of the editorial board may submit their own manuscripts for publishing, which must be assessed in the very same way as all the other manuscripts. When choosing the peer reviewers every possible aspect of conflict of interests must be detected and considered.

Editors for the periodical titled Magyar Építőművészet follow the guidelines for editors defined by the Committee on Publication Ethics as well as their collection of the best practices.
Editors as authors
Editors acting as authors are to work in an exemplary way concerning both ethics and professional standards.
Editorial independency
Editors make their decisions freely, independently and based on professional considerations only, free from commercial-financial concerns and influences. MÉSZ, the Association of Hungarian Architects acting as a publisher guarantees the autonomy of the editorial board and shall not interfere with professional decisions concerning the periodical in any way.
Confidentiality
Each manuscript submitted is to be treated as a confidential document, and can be open to discuss only with the prior consent of the editor-in-chief before publication.
Commitment to high standards
Editors work out processes in line with the goals of the periodical to guarantee the standards of the material published and the integrity of research work. All throughout their work, editors pay attention to the assertion of intellectual and ethical norms that should not be jeopardized by business needs and interests.
Fairness of peer review
Editors encourage peer reviewers to follow the ethical norms and provide objective, non-biased assessment. Editors make their desicions in line with our ethical norms and with regard to the mission of the periodical.
Error correction code
Editors are to detect and filter errors before publication with reasonable care and diligence. Typos and misleading statements detected later are published in the next issue on the first pages under the heading „corrections”.
Authenticity
Plagiarism is considered unacceptable and an unethical behaviour by the editorial board. We ask each participant in the processes of publication to keep the ethical norms concerning originality and plagiarism.
Ethical norms concerning authors
We request authors cooperating with the periodical Magyar Építőművészet to follow the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics as well as their collection of best practices.
Authenticity
It is the responsibility of authors to claim that the study they have submitted is an authentic, original intellectual property product of their own. We regard any kind of behaviour revealing plagiarism unacceptable Only authentic, original manuscripts, results of research work are acceptable. External sources, ideas and concepts originating from other authors must be used as rightly quoted references with the appropriate indices. Works by other authors can only be used by including the necessary references and data.
Prohibition of multiple publication
Submitting the same manuscript, research results to several periodicals is agains ethic norms,and is thus unacceptable for our periodical. The same holds true for submitting manuscripts, scientific results that have already been published elsewhere.
Open Communication about Subsidy from Sources
In case the article is sponsored, the sources are to be obviously indicated.
Conflict of Interests
Any possible aspect of conflict of interests is to be indicated.
Ethical Norms
In the articles, studies and background research work the general ethical norms are to be kept. When it comes to topics needing the approval of the committe of ethics authors are asked to present the written consent of the committee and/or of the participants.
Authorship
Only a person substantially contributing to the concept, design, execution of the study can be named as author here, and everyone acting as contributor is to be regarded and named as author. Co-authors are to be mentioned as such in case they have significantly contributed to the study. Everyone is to be mentioned as a contributor or participant if they have taken part in the research work the study is based on. The author is to guarantee that he or she has named every co-author, and that they have approved of the final version of the article. Authors also guarantee the authenticity of what is written in the study.
Ethical Norms Concerning Peer-Reviewers
The periodical titled Magyar Építőművészet requests its peer-reviewers to follow the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics concerning peer-reviewers and their collection of best practices.
The Process of Peer-Reviewing
The editor-in-chief makes decisions about inviting peer-reviewers. The periodical titled Magyar Építőművészet employs the process of collegial peer-reviewing, the primary objective of which is to assist decisions made by the editor-in-chief and to guarantee professional standards. Peer-reviewers act as consultants in the editorial processes, and editors are not obliged to consider previewers’ opinions.
Anonimity (double blind review)
Peer-reviewers are obliged to remain anonymous, and not allowed to get into contact with the author. In case more than one peer-reviewers assess a manuscript, they are expected to stay anonymous among themselves. Editors convey communication and messages among previewers and authors.
Privacy and Confidentiality
Peer-reviewers are expected to treat manuscripts confidentially. They should not share any information with others, the only exception being the editor authorized to communicate with the peer-reviewers.
Competency, Conflict of Interests, Equal Opportunities
The peer-reviewer is expected to be professionally competent to provide appropriate opinion about the manuscript and suited to give unbiased assessment. Peer-reviewers should form opinions objectively, regardless of the author’s race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, citizenship, religious beliefs or political views.
Professional responsibility, objectivity
Peer-reviewers are required to phrase a well-established and constructive opinion to help the author revise the manuscript. The peer-reviewer is to submit an objective, unambiguously phrased opinion supported by reasons.
Adequate Feed-Back
The assessment of the peer reviewer is expected to be professional, free from personal biasses, should refrain from personal remarks, any form of defamation, humiliation or derogation, and should not contain unjustified or baseless accusations.
Rivalry, Revealing Advocacy
Peer reviewers are to reveal all kinds of rivalling and competitive interests or conflicts (of personal, professional, intellectual, financial, political, religious nature) for the editors and the editor-in-chief. People who work in the same institution (including the past three years), mentors, mentees, close workmates, participants of the same project are excluded from acting as peer-reviewers.
Guidelines for Authors
Objectives and topics
The periodical titled Magyar Építőművészet accepts reviews of buildings with literary and scientific standards, essays, original studies presenting scientific achievements of architecture, manuscripts, reviews of books on architecture or its associated fields, and reviews of exhibitions. The supplement titled Utóirat accepts authentic and original studies on architectural theory, the history of architecture, protection of historic buildings and monuments, architectural heritage, rehabilitation, reconstruction, revitalization, interior architecture, design, urbanism, sacred architecture, landscape design, environmental psychology, public domain development, construction science, engineered structures, eco-conscious and sustainable architecture, architectural innovation, associated arts and sciences, innovative technological novelties, manuscripts on topics of philosophy, space theory, aesthetics, ecology, professional policy. Submitting Manuscripts
Manuscripts are kindly requested to be submitted via this email: epitomuveszet@gmail.com.
The manuscript lengths are to be discussed with the editors. The typical length of a study published in the supplement titled Utóirat (Post Scriptum) tends to vary between 10,000 and 30,000 characters.
Studies are to be submitted by attaching an abstract in both Hungarian and Engish languages with a maximum length of 800-1,500 charcters.

Sources and works by other authors are to be referred to in footnotes. When firstly occurring, please use the entire form of the reference, then in an abbreviated form if it is a source by the same author, including the name and date (year).

Archiving Methods
The periodical Magyar Építőművészet takes responsibility for the cultural values it has created so far. Accordingly, we send 6 copies of each issue of the printed version of our publication to the National Széchényi Library for archiving. As for internet-based digital archives, we are contracted with Arcanum Digitális Tudománytárral (ADT, Arcanum Digitized Science Archives) where we send our new issues within 18 months of publication. In ADT the digitised issues are available dating back as early as 1903.
