The First 14 Years of the Imre Makovecz Foundation
Text: Pál Makovecz
Shortly after Imre Makovecz’s death, in early 2012, the Imre Makovecz Foundation was established to manage his heritage. In addition to family members, colleagues, students, and friends of Imre Makovecz hold and have held positions in this foundation. Meanwhile, Imre Makovecz’s heirs decided to offer the architect’s own house, which he did not have time to move into, to the state for purchase with the aim of establishing a center to manage Imre Makovecz’s legacy. At the end of 2015, Government Decree No. 2022 was issued, which has provided a framework for this ambitious project. The continuation of the project was provided by the government-funded Makovecz Fund, which has so far completed the renovation of more than twenty buildings and the construction of nearly ten buildings or extensions designed by Imre Makovecz but not previously realized. In 2017, the Makovecz Center and Archive, the headquarters of the Foundation and a venue for programs related to the spirit of Imre Makovecz, was opened.
