  • The Organic Architecture in the Hungarian Higher Education

    Text: Gábor Erhardt

Several events have been held to mark the 90th anniversary of Imre Makovecz’s birth, presenting various aspects of the oeuvre of Hungary’s most significant architect of recent times, including his “teaching activities.” Fourteen years after Imre Makovecz’s death, it may be well worth asking this question: To what extent has the Master’s work been incorporated into Hungarian architectural education? What and how much do students know about it, and how relevant is it to them? There are two places where Hungarian organic architecture, including Makovecz’s architecture, is present as an independent, so-called elective subject: at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and at the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture at Óbuda University. At the former educational institution, on the initiative of department head Antal Lázár, a three-semester course was launched in 2003 under the direct supervision and active participation of Imre Makovecz. The course is currently available optionally as an elective within the Department of Architectural History and Heritage Conservation, and its curriculum is refined year by year to reflect and meet the interests of the students. At the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture at Óbuda University, it is also an elective subject, but only as a one-semester course on Hungarian organic architecture, where we try to follow the above-mentioned topics with a narrower focus.
