Holocaust Memorial in Terézváros
In May 2025, the Municipality of Terézváros (Budapest 6th district) announced a two-round, open tender to erect a memorial on Liszt Ferenc Square to the hundreds of victims who were killed and buried in mass graves on the square during the rule of the Hungarian Nazi party. Liszt Ferenc Square is a memorial to the tragic fate of the Jews of Terézváros and, more broadly, Budapest. According to eyewitnesses, on January 10, 1945, several shots were fired at the square, while hundreds of Jewish people were dragged here, shot, and then buried here with laborers and residents of the area. Nearly 500 bodies were later found in the mass grave, and according to a 1977 newspaper article, during the rule of the Hungarian Nazi party government, Liszt Ferenc Square was the largest mass grave in Budapest outside the Danube. From the submitted entries, the professional jury selected Individin Studio’s work titled Hasadás (Cleavage) for implementation.
