  • Physical Changes of State Socialist Small Housing Estates in Budapest from their Construction to the Present Day

    Text: Bence Bene

Small housing estates were constructed across Budapest during the era of state socialism, characterized by diverse architectural and urban designs. They represent a unique, complex, and internationally under-researched layer of the post-war mass housing construction. Thirty-five years after the regime change, we can assess the success of these developments based on physical indicators: how their physical context (neighbourhood), spatial usage, and built heritage have evolved. Could we allocate a difference compared to the transformation of large housing estates (which has been well documented in the literature before)? Following the outline of the theoretical background, the changes in the physical characteristics of the 104 state socialist small housing estates in Budapest are presented. They are illustrated with quantitative data and either a general or particularly unique example. The research utilizes archival and contemporary maps, satellite images, photographs, and documents.
