Safe-House, Transylvania

The safe-house network of the region referred to as the Székely Land has been enriched with a new building. Built after former typology designs that were adapted to local needs, this latest addition was constructed in 2017 in Farkaspalló in Gyimes. The network was launched in 2011 based on designs by Arnold Macalik architects and blipsz! architects’ team as they were typologies quick to build. The safe-house function necessitated a flexible design adapting to local needs that could be changed as the natural environment, the locality, the soil standards, the orientation allow and require. According to this scheme, the mass of each safe house and their building materials refer to the temporary shelters and local barns used by shepherds in the mountains. The primary building material was thus pine timber,which is the typically and traditionally used in the region, whilst the spaces, functions, configurations, structures and details of the old barn typology were reinterpreted.
