Sports Swimming Pool, Győr

A construction project of generous scales as well as steps made in order to boost the population and sports life in the city feature schemes meant to re-interpret the north-western part of Győr: this sequence starts with the new sports swimming-pool. The aluminium roof bent to arch is trendy in itself, but it is actually the gesture shaping it which counts here: the dual ambition to close it southward and open it northward has been condensed into this tracery. The space wedged between slanting row of columns bordering the pool and the gallery forest reaching up to the foliage of the trees may be interpreted as a self-supporting ship. It is completed by an outer row of timber pillars to function as a promenade. The abstract avenue forms part of a long, gently undulating line which guides our eye to the entrance. The structure representing new scales has been completed for the events of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) – the occasion for which the athletic stadium, gym halls and tennis courts are also going to be built. With a seating capacity for 800 spectators, the grand stand visually forms a continuous integral part of the ground floor belonging to it structurally. The scene of the „sports theatre” is the gallery forest framed by pylons in the north, which in turn creeps into the hall owing to its slender arch supports. Bathed in light, the interior is defined by the prominence of monolithic reinforced concrete topped by a clear steel structure constructed without truss elements.
