The Parallels of the Városmajor Street School

The building complex, situated in the neighbourhood of Városmajor, was built between August 1910 and November 1911, according to the plans of Károly Kós and Dénes Györgyi, as part of the school building programme of Mayor István Bárczy. The elementary school included a kindergarten, a headmaster’s apartment, a kindergarten teacher’s apartment as well as three staff apartments. One of the great merit sof the school building programme in the capital was that it also gave room to representatives of new trends. Although Károly Kós and Dénes Györgyi were young people in 1910, they were entrusted with this significant and important task. During the preparation of the programme, a number of principles were established to which the designers had to adhere, but the overall appearance and style of the building was not defined in advance. The school on Városmajor Street is particularly significant because it has found a way of using elements of vernacular architecture to adapt its forms to the metropolitan environment.
