A Couple of Personal Memories
Text: Gábor Mezei
In the mid-1960s, interior designer Gábor Mezei met Imre Makovecz while working as a designer for SZÖTERV, and was deeply impressed by his approach to style. Following Makovecz’s example, he also rebelled against the monotony and dullness of modernist industrial architecture and began to design in his own unique style. With his knowledge of Hungarian and European cultural traditions and 20th-century modern styles, he became one of the most original figures among interior designers with a new, organic approach. As a co-creator, he most often worked as the interior designer of public buildings built by Imre Makovecz. With his surreal furniture creations, he not only furnished but also populated and dramatized the interior spaces. His most frequently used compositional elements were the ancient circle, the tree of life, and the wing. In his writing, he recalls his personal memories of his friendship with Imre Makovecz and the moments they shared together.
