The Power of Objects
The Legacy of Károly Kós in the Collections of the MÉM MDK
Text: Fanni Izabella Magyaróvári
The collections of the Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Documentation Centre for the Protection of Historic Monuments contain about 780 plans and 225 photographs of Károly Kós’s works, that is more than 1,000 objects specifically related to his individual buildings. The author of this study high-lights those objects that shed new light on Károly Kós’s oeuvre, complementing and completing the contemporary image of the architect. From early graphic works to group photographs, from a model of the zoo pavilion that no longer stands to a colour autochrome photograph made using a special process, from a portrait of Károly Kós taken during the 1956 revolution to a correspondence with a client, the objects reveal a rich and fairly varied picture of the career of an exceptional artist.
